Recently, Bob Edwards, the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of ANU's Department of Computer Science was quoted as having said the following:
The ANUNorth wireless network is a "best-effort" facility - if it works for you, well and good.
If wireless networks were at the cutting-edge of technology, then this sort of attitude may be permissible. But the fact of the matter is, wireless networks are pretty much standard at most universities -- indeed, the ANU's Department of Information feels that the wireless network is important enough to deploy one in most locations on campus (except of course, in the vicinity of DCS -- likely for fear of incurring Bob's wrath).
Furthermore, the facilities provided by DCS's Technical Services Group (TSG) are so lacking and unreliable that most students opt to provide their own facilities to get assignments done on time (read: laptop). Perhaps these facilities (servers, desktop computers) are run under a "best-effort" arrangement too.
