While it's unfortunate that we have had yet another death on our roads, how do the Police intend to curb our horrendous road toll when they have no credibility? In the last week, on four occasions I witnessed marked police cars, without emergency lights activated, displaying absolutely atrocious behavior on our roads. I lodged a complaint against one officer about this.
Today, I received a phone call from a member of the AFP's Professional Standards section, who informed me that marked police cars were permitted, by law, to disobey the road rules, including talking on a hand-held mobile phone. This officer also mentioned that there was a corruption problem in relation to officers issuing unjustified traffic infringements.
The Police will need to demonstrate that they have respect for our road rules if they expect to enforce them with any degree of credibility. Hopefully then, we can work to decrease our road toll next year.
